Brief itinerary:

Day 1 – May 30 – Tuesday – Arrive in Sofia.

Day 2 – May 31 – Wednesday – Sofia Sightseeing tour – Plovdiv

Day 3 – June 1 – Saturday – Plovdiv – Kazanlak

Day 4 – June 2 – Sunday – Kazanlak festivities – Veliko Tarnovo

Day 5 – June 3 – Monday – Veliko Tarnovo – Sofia

Day 6 – June 4 – Tuesday – Transfer to the airport for your departure flight. End of service.

 

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 – May 30Sofia arrive

Arrive at the Sofia airport. Meet your Bulgrian tour guide. Transfer to your hotel.

Day 2 – May 31 Sofia – Sightseeing tour of Sofia – Plovdiv

In the morning take a walking sightseeing tour of Sofia including the Monument of Alexander II – Tzar Liberator, the Parliament, The Statue of St Sofia – the symbol of the city, the Presidency, the National Theater, the Ruins of Serdica and the Rotonda St George 4th c. AC, the Synagogue.

Departure to Plovdiv. After arrivaltake a sightseeing tour. Visit the most impressive building of Roman time that has come to us rising above the city is the Antique Amphitheatreby Emperor Mark Avrelii during the 2nd c. A.D. Its magnificent arcade adorned with marble statues is simply breath-taking. Visit the Ethographic museum housed in the biggest and the most beautiful house of the Old town – the Kuyumdzhioglu’s House. The Roman Stadiumis also constructed during the II century and reproduces the layout in Delphi, Greece. Within the centre of the ancient major town of the Roman province of Thrace remains of stone paved streets, foundations of buildings and columns and ancient fortress walls and gates reside. Visit the Roman house « Eirene » where you will admire extremely well preserved mozaics “in situ”, originals from the 4thcentury. Last visit for today is the Small Bishop’s Basilica dated to the late 5thcentury and today is one of the Plovdiv’s landmarks with its mozaic floor with geometrical motifs and a small chapel and a baptistery. Reminder of the day – time to explore the art quarter « Kapana » and have coffee in one of its little cafés. In the evening attend a concert or some musical events if available in the cultural calendar for the day.

Note: Plovdiv is one of the two European capitals of culture 2019 and a lot of events will be going on. I will check the calendar for that day to see what performances there will be and will let you know.

B Accommodation in Plovdiv in Villa Antica

Day 3 – June 1 – Saturday – Plovdiv – Kazanlak

In the morning departure to Kazanlak. Attend rose picking in the morning. In the region of Kazanlak visit two Thracian tombs dating to the 4th century BC – The Golyamata Kosmatka and the Kazanlak tomb (UNESCO). You will visit the copy as the original is closed for the public.

Walk in the Rosarium park and visit the Rose museum. At 7 pm starts the International Folklore Festival. At 9 pm enjoy a concert on the main square. Evening at leisure to enjoy the festivities on the main square. Accommodation. Overnight.

B Accommodation in Kazanlak in Grand hotel Kazanlak

 Day 4 – June 2 – Sunday –Kazanlak rose festival – Veliko Tarnovo

Day of festivities: Two main events mark the celebrations – harvesting ritual in the rose gardens and the parade along the streets of the town. After arriving in Kazanlak experience rose picking and enjoy beautiful authentic folklore dances. At noon follow the Carnival parade and the procession which will close the festivities. In the afternoon departure to Veliko Tarnovo. On the way visit Etara – open air craft museum where have been preserved 22 crafts practiced by the locals in the 18thand 19thcentury. Arrive in Veliko Tarnovo. Accommodation. Overnight.

B Accommodation in Veliko tarnovo in hotel Gurko *** or similar – subject of availability

Day 5 – June 3 – Monday –Veliko Tarnovo – Sofia

In the morningtake a tourto Veliko Tarnovo. For more than two centuries Tarnovo is the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (the end of XII – XIV century.). It is the center, where were decided the most important political, religious, administrative and cultural issues in the life of the mediaeval state. Contemporaries spare the epithets calling it “Great Tarnov”, “Queen of the Cities” “… second in words and deeds after Istanbul,” its fame wore in distant lands, reaching to the “North Ocean”. Visit the Tsarevets Fortress – the stronghold of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (12th – 14th century) when Tarnovo was its capital.During the excavations there were found 470 residential buildings, 23 churches, 3 monasteries and an inn.  When visiting Tsarevets, make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes, as visiting the fortress involves some degree of hiking on cobbled pathways. From the Patriarchal Church you have a beautiful view over the city. 

In the village of Arbanassi you will visit the church of “the Nativity” called the Sistine chapel on the Balkans thanks to its extremely rich gallery counting more than 4000 images.

Departure to Sofia. Arrive in the afternoon. Accommodation. Overnight.

Day 6 –June 4 – Transfer to the Sofia airport for your departure flight. End of service.
