Day 2 – September 21 – Sofia – Sightseeing tour of Sofia 

Enjoy your day in Sofia – visit the Boyana Church (Unesco site). Admire its beautiful freascoes dating to 1259. In the National Museum of History you will get acqueinted with the rich history of Bulgaria. Here is the Gold Thracian Treasure dating to the 4th c. BC. Return to the central part. Continue with a walking sightseeing tour of Sofia. Visit the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral – the biggest and the most beautiful on the Balkan Peninsula, the Monument of Alexander II – Tzar Liberator, the Parliament, The Statue of St Sofia – the symbol of the city, the Presidency, the National Theater, the Ruins of Serdica and the Rotonda St George 4th c. Day 3 – September 22 – Sofia – The Rila Monastery – Sofia

The Rila Monastery – the richest historical and architectural monument of the Orthodox enclave, founded in 10th century and transformed to the most important spiritual and cultural center of Bulgaria. The visitor’s first sight of Rila monastery huge towering walls gives the impression of a fortress. However, a step through the archway produces a wonderful surprise. The Monastery’s unrivalled architecture and murals will captivate you. Return to Sofia. Accommodation. Overnight.

Day 4 – September 23 – Sofia – Plovdiv. Sightseeing tour of Plovdiv. Free time in the afternoon.

Plovdiv. Take a sightseeing tour of Plovdiv – the second largest town of Bulgaria, an area since the time of Philip, King of Macedonia, father of Alexander The Great. The most impressive building of Roman time that has come to us rising above the city is the Antique theatre by Emperor Mark Avrelii during the 2nd c. A.D. Its magnificent arcade adorned with marble statues is simply breath-taking. You will also visit the Roman Stadium dating to the 2nd cetury, the yellow school, the house of La Martin, the Old Pharmacie, the church St Constantin and Helena, the house of Kuyumdjioglu, today turned into museum, the Nebet tepe where have been discovered parts of the Thracian walls that fortified the hill.

Day 5 – September 24 – Plovdiv – Hissarya – Koprivshtitsa – Starosel – Plovdiv

First stop today is Hissarya where you will see absolutely well preserved fortress wall dating to the Roman period – 4th century. Visit the Roman tomb dating to the same period. Hissarya is also one of the most popular balneological resorts renowned for its more than 20 springs of curative mineral water. Continue to the village of Koprivshtitsa. It boasts a large number of architectural monuments from the Revival period, 383 in all, most of which have been restored to their original appearance. Collections of ethnographic treasures, old weapons, National Revival works of art, fine fretwork, household weaves and embroidery, national costumes and typical Bulgarian jewelry has also been preserved. Departure to Plovdiv. On the way back your last stop for today will be the Starosel Thracain tomb – an original – dating to the 4 th century BC. Arrive in Plovdiv at around 7 pm. Day 6 – September 25 – Plovdiv – Perperikon – boat on the Studen Kladenets dam – Plovdiv

Today you will enjoy the beauty of the East Rhodopi mountain. Visit Perperikon –  an archaeologic complex, the largest megalith complex on the Balkans. Dating from the time of the Roman Empire, archaeologists have uncovered a giant multi-story palace and an imposing fortress built around the hill, with walls as thick as 2.8 m. Temples and quarters of residential buildings were also constructed in the fortress. Have lunch in the village of Zvezdelina in a Turkish family’s house where you will have the chance to meet locals and taste the local cuisine. After lunch take a boat on the Studen Kladenets dam and admire some beautiful views. If lucky you will see some wild goats or deers. Return to Plovdiv. B Accommodation in Plovdiv

Day 7 – September 26 – Plovdiv – Kazanlak – Etara – Veliko Tarnovo

After breakfast departure to the town of Kazanlak situated in the Valley of Roses. Here apart from vast rose fields blooming in May and June you will visit the Golyamata Kosmatka Thracian tomb dating to the 4th century BC and will get more information about the Thracian tribes who lived on the lands of present day Bulgaria. Continueto the Russian church built in 1902 to commemorate all the 200 000 soldiers who lost their lives for the liberation of Bulgaria. After crossing the Shipka pass visit the open air museum « Etara » where have been presented 15 crafts practiced by the locals in the 17th – 19th century – weaving, cutlery, icon painting, saw mill and others.  Proceed to Veliko Tarnovo. Start exploring the city with the Tsarevets Royal hill. The neighboring Arbanassi museum village is a genuine gallery of art. A must here is the 15th century Church of the Nativity, repainted in the 17th century. Because of its more than 1200 frescoes, It is also called the Sistine Chapel on the Balkans. Located on the hills above the meandering river Yantra, this city, once a glorious mediaeval capital (1186 – 1393), is now attracting thousands of romantic travelers with its irresistible atmosphere. Mixing the legends of the past with bursting joy of hundreds of young students – this is Veliko Tarnovo today, the second most important University City after Sofia. Day 8 – September 27 – Veliko Tarnovo – Zheravna – Ruhovtsi – Maryan – Veliko Tarnovo

Departure to Jeravna – a living museum village with houses built some 250, even 300 years ago.  Time has stopped here… You won’t see people hurry for work or anything else. Life is passing with the typical tranquility of the mountain villages living. People of Zheravna are somehow over the everyday things – maybe a remain from the great past of the village. After you take a walk around the cobble stone streets have lunch in a local restaurants where you cant ase some dishes typical for the region. Deaprture to the village of Maryan where in a small boutique family winery you will taste some great local wines. Day 9 – September 28 – Free day in Veliko Tarnovo

Day 10 – September 29 – Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria – Brasov, Romania

Head to the Romanian boarder at Rousse – Giurgiu. Proceed for Sinaia – one of the famous Carpathian Mountains town. Named after St. Catherine Monastery on Mount Sinai, Sinaia became the unofficial capital of the Kingdom of Romania toward the end of the 19th century. The Orient Express use to regularly call here and it still does once a year on its way from Paris to Constantinople. Take an orientation tour including a view of the Casino building inspired by the one in Monte Carlo and a visit to Sinaia Orthodox Monastery. Next is one of the most important tourist attractions of the country:  Peles Castle and Gardens , the former royal residence of King Charles I of Romania and known as one of the most beautiful summer royal residences in Europe. Then cross the mountains into Transylvania to Brasov. Hotel check in. The evening  is at leisure. Enjoy Brasov’s lovely pedestrian area of the Old Town with its many shops, traditional restaurants and outdoor cafes.

Day 11 – September 30 – Brasov Tour – The Saxon Trail – Walking Tour of Sighisoara

Hot and cold buffet breakfast at hotel. Take a morning tour of Brasov with a guided tour of the Gothic Black Church with its valuable collection of Anatolian prayer rugs. Brasov has one of the best preserved medieval quarter and fortifications. The tour will include the Council Square, Schei Quarter and the First School in Romanian language, the Rope Street and Catherine’s Gate. View of the Brasov 1901 synagogue. Later drive through the picturesque Transylvanian Plateau with its quaint villages and Saxon fortifications such as Saschiz. Afternoon arrival to Sighisoara, a World Heritage Site and the only still inhabited medieval citadel in Europe. It was developed by the German settlers as of late 12th century. It stands on a network of tunnels and catacombs and, according to one version of the myth; this is where the Pied Piper brought the children of Hamelin after their ungrateful parents refused to pay him his due. Sighisoara is the place where the famous Vlad the Impaler Dracula was born in 1431. The Birthplace is today a restaurant and one of the main tourist attractions. Visit the exquisite Spoonman Exhibition of Transylvanian Arts & Crafts. The evening is at leisure in Brasov.

Day 12 – October 1 – Brasov – Bran Castle – Bucharest

Leave Brasov in the morning to drive to the medieval  Bran Castle also known as Dracula Castle. The castle was built in 1377 to safeguard the trading route between Transylvania and Wallachia to later be turned into a royal residence under Queen Marie of Romania. The connection between this place and Vlad the Impaler Dracula is still under debate, but the castle is definitely worth a visit. Enjoy cheese sampling on the premises. Head for Bucharest with arrival in the mid afternoon. Transfer to your htoel with the remainder of the day at leisure.

OPTIONAL: In the evening enjoy a Welcome Dinner and a Folklore Show.

Day 13 – October 2 – Bucharest City Tour with Tour of Parliament

This morning take a city tour of Bucharest including the Revolution Square, the Palace of the Parliament – the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon, Cotroceni Quarter for its representative architecture and the Village Museum – one of the world’s most interesting open air museums with century old original peasant households from all parts of Romania.
